Vandebergh, W. & Franky Bossuyt - Multiple radiations of keratins during amphibian evolution. 2008 - Abstract on Benelux Congress of Zoology 2008.

Wim is studying the evolution of toe pads in amphibians. During his graduate thesis, he got fascinated by the origin and loss of complex morphological features in amphibians. The highly specialized structure of a frog's toe pad is a significant example of morphological convergent evolution in anurans. Wim is now examining the genetic background of toe pad formation by focusing on expression in toe pad-specific genes. Analyzing genes that are involved in toe pad formation will result in a better understanding of the multiple origin of one of the most complex ecological adaptations in the evolution of anurans.
